40 per cent of Tuberculosis cases are from Mumbai: Health Ministry Report

A survey from Health Ministry Information System (HMIS) has revealed that 40 per cent Tuberculosis (TB) cases in Maharashtra are from Mumbai. Data suggests that between March 2017 and April 2018, 1,709 cases of Pediatric TB were reported in the state, out of which about 40 per cent i.e. 685 cases are from Mumbai.

In 2017, there were a total of 45,675 cases were reported from the city. Further, between March 2017 to April 2018, more than 4,000 patients were cured of Multi-Drug Resistant TB (MDR-TB), which is a form of tuberculosis infection caused by bacteria that are resistant to treatment with at least two of the most powerful anti-TB medications, I soniazid and Rifampin.

Although there is no lack of awareness about TB in Mumbai, the number of TB patients in the city is increasing. Every year about 1 lakh 75 thousand TB cases are reported in the state and most cases appear in government hospitals.

Palghar is second to the list after Mumbai for the cases of Pediatric TB with more than 450 patients suffering from the disorder.
