The ingenious plan approved by BMC Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal was curated by Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani. Faced with a devastating pandemic, there has been an acute shortage of doctors to cater to the rising healthcare needs. In order to address this concern, the BMC intends to bring on board retired doctors who worked in medical colleges for 3 years.
The BMC Commissioner was quoted saying that doctors in private hospitals work till the age of 70 and are in the fittest of health. Thus, taking inspiration from the same, to ensure that talent isn’t lost and brain drain is prevented, BMC doctors will be asked to work after retirement. They will not be able to enjoy administrative rights, since others shouldn’t be deprived of the ability to secure a promotion.
A committee has been constituted under the able guidance of Deputy Commissioner Public Health, Devidas Kshirsagar along with the deans of all medical colleges. This committee will then select retired deans and professors who upon selection will work under a dean.
Currently, doctors, as well as professors at government-run medical colleges, offer their services till they reach 64 years of age. Similarly, those at BMC run colleges do so till 62 years. According to the new plan, doctors who worked at BMC run medical colleges prior to their retirement can be brought in for reappointment till they reach 65 years of age. This will be on a contractual basis for 3 years, wherein although they will attain salary, they will not be able to enjoy pension benefits.
The plan has said to be brought into action to prepare for the impending waves that lay ahead by ensuring that great minds join the battle against COVID-19.
