In the last five months, 101 robotic surgeries have been performed by robots brought in for knee implant surgery at KEM Hospital. All these surgeries have been successful and the patients have been discharged home from the hospital in a short period of time. In 2016, a proposal to introduce a robot in the orthopaedic department of KEM Hospital was submitted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Administration. But due to Corona, the process of introducing the robot was stopped.
Hospital founder Dr. Sangeeta Rawat and Head of Orthopedics Dr. Mohan Desai brought a robot for the orthopaedics department through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. Therefore, the KEM Hospital has become the first government hospital in the country to perform robotic surgery. The first successful knee implant surgery was performed using a robot in March 2024 at KEM Hospital. After that, the doctors of this department continuously performed surgeries and successfully completed the 101st surgery on August 9 at 6 pm. In just five months, 101 surgeries have been completed in KEM hospital with the help of robots, said the founder of KEM hospital Sangeeta Rawat.
Eight surgeries a week
In March 2024, the first knee implant surgery was successful. After that, three to four surgeries were performed in a week initially. But within just a few days, the number of surgeries reached eight a week. All these surgeries have been successful. Robotic surgery usually costs INR 3 to INR 4 lakh. But these surgeries are free due to Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. Dr. Mohan Desai, Medical Superintendent and Head of Orthopaedic Department of KEM Hospital said that like patients, college students are also being helped to learn orthopaedic surgery.
