In accordance with the data provided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai saw more than a six-fold increase in monthly fatalities related to heart attacks in the first six months of 2021 in contrast to the earlier years.
According to the statistic, between January and June 2021, nearly 3,000 individuals lost their lives to heart attacks every month in Mumbai. This when juxtaposed to 2020 was 500.
The data was brought to light as a reply to an RTI request filed by activist Chetan Kothari. The information further brings to light that an aggregate of 5,849 patients succumbed to heart attacks in the city in 2019.
The number fell by 3.6 per cent when in 2020, 5,633 patients lost their lives to heart attacks in the city. However, between January and June 2021, a total of 17,880 people died because of heart attacks in Mumbai. This was an increase of 217 per cent over the previous year.
On the other hand, Maharashtra's health department data elucidate that in 2019-20, an aggregate of 173,678 patients was diagnosed with diabetes in the state, in 2020-21 this number was 127,320. In the same period, the number of hypertension patients too fell from 230,476 to 166,968.
