A year after the Chinchpokli station revamp project was proposed, the tender for this much-awaited plan likely to be floated by the mid of this month.
The Central Railway (CR) will redevelop the Chinchpokli station with an elevated deck as a part of the Amrit Bharat scheme launched by the railway ministry to improve amenities at the stations with a budget of Rs 41 crores.
The proposed station revamp will generate 600 square metres of space for commercial use at the roof of the deck, while the deck is intended to distribute passenger load more evenly.
The deck will be connected to the platform through escalators for entry and exit. Whereas, the commercial rooftop space on deck is likely to be rented out to cafes and restaurants considering the area is surrounded by big corporate offices.
As per reports, the rooftop amenities will come at a height of nine metres from track level, giving a panoramic view of Mumbai’s skyline. Interestingly, once the construction is over, the station will resemble a modern Metro station.
The existing pedestrian pavement on the road overbridge will also be expanded giving much more space for movement of passengers alighting at the station.
It will be particularly acute during the Ganapati festival when crowds flock to this station for the darshan of Lord Ganesh idols, installed by various mandals, especially Lalbaugcha Raja. Currently, the public gather on the ROB.
Over 36,000 passengers use this station daily to commute to adjacent localities like Arthur Road, Saat Rasta, Lalbaugh areas where high rise residential as well as commercial towers have surfaced in the recent past.
