Dahisar river rejuvenation project inaugurated

Cabinet Minister, Aaditya Thackeray, on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, performed the Bhoomi pujan of the Dahisar river rejuvenation project. As per reports, the work is expected to start immediately and is anticipated to be completed in the next 24 months. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has informed the same, however, the deadlines will not include the monsoon months of June, July, August, and September.

A total of 11 components have been mentioned as a part of the project, whereby concerned departments will also work on constructing two wastewater treatment facilities. Besides this, sewer lines will be constructed which will connect to the nearby settlements, construct nullahs which will connect to the river, plan units for waste segregation units, construct green spaces and mangrove parks, fencing around the river, etc.

Teams have been asked to focus on aspects like desludging the riverbed, preservation of wetlands and developing new wetlands as well, as important parts of the project. The first part of the project would be rejuvenation and will be followed by two other phases – naturalization and preservation.

Officials will begin by preventing the entry of pollutants followed by creating a buffer, and preserving the biodiversity and ecology, and ending with drafting plans to continue the operation and maintenance.

Sharing more information, Minister Aaditya Thackeray took to Twitter and said, “This project will begin with preventing pollutants into the stream through interception & treatment plants. One will be happy to know that we are creating open spaces across the stretch & increasing green cover, developing wetlands, mangrove parks to preserve the river’s ecology.”

Work on rejuvenation of the four major rivers of Mumbai, Dahisar, Poisar, Oshiwara, and Mithi has started, with Saturday’s inauguration of the project for Dahisar river,” added, Additional Municipal Commissioner, P Velarasu, who is also the in charge of the project.
