Mumbai’s first cable-stayed road overbridge at Reay Road station is now ready for full operation. Sources confirm the bridge is expected to open to the public on January 26, 2025. Construction was completed in just two years, making it one of the quickest-built bridges in the country.
The bridge is a six-lane structure with a pedestrian walkway. It spans 385 meters and costs INR 2.73 billion. The project began on February 14, 2022, under the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC). This project will be an important infrastructure upgrade for the city.
The project reached 88% completion by August 2024. However, construction was briefly delayed due to the November Maharashtra Assembly Elections. Despite this, the bridge has been successfully completed.
The bridge has several modern features:
- It complies with Indian Road Congress standards.
- It offers enough space for rail movement below.
- The structure includes architectural LED lighting for better night visibility and an enhanced aesthetic look.
- It also has a bridge health monitoring system.
- The system provides real-time updates on the bridge's condition to ensure long-term safety and stability.
This bridge is part of a city-wide initiative to replace ageing British-era bridges. The goal is to reduce local traffic congestion and improve connectivity. The bridge includes a 1.52-kilometre section and two down ramps. These features will increase traffic flow and commuter safety. It improves connectivity to the rest of the areas through the Barrister Nath Pai Road underpass.
