Pune Airport's new terminal building work is in full swing as nearly 95 per cent of work is done. The trial for systems has begun. If all goes well, then this swanky new terminal building will be open for Punekars by September-end.

The New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) will have a built-up area of 50,000 sqm. With this the Pune airport will have a capacity to handle 16 million passengers per annum. The completed building will have 10 aerobridges and 72 check-in counters. Of the the total, three aerobridges will connect the old and new terminal buildings. Moreover, international flights will take off from the new terminal.

"At present, the building is 95% complete and will be ready for inauguration by the end of September. The trial for systems has begun," a senior airport official said. The building will reflect famous historical landmarks of the state

The work on the new terminal began in 2018 for INR 475 crore. But, was delayed due to the pandemic. Airport officials claimed the building would provide several new facilities for flyers besides curtailing the perennial problem of crowding.

An important aspect of the project is integrating both buildings. Work on the airside has already begun. A clearance is waited from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to dismantle and shift the existing cargo hold, an airport official added.
