For excavation of the southern part of Coastal Road, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had closed about 1.07 km long footpath on Marine Drive. On Tuesday, June 18, the civic body said that it has been restored and opened for public use. A part of the 3.6-km-long iconic promenade was closed to pedestrians for the last 4 years.

This development came days after the another tunnel on Mumbai coastal road was thrown open for motorists on June 10

The south-to-north-phase footpath along Marine Drive extends from G D Somani Chowk till Savitribai Phule Girls Hostel.

The newly-appointed BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has given instructions for regular maintenance of toilets and footpaths along with adequate lighting as a large number of tourists visit this spot.

Civic officials stated that the seating arrangements have been made as before. Moreover, work on planning street lights is in progress. Besides, the installation of the tetrapod is being done along Marine Drive for a distance of 590 meters from south to north. The work is in final stage. Tetrapods have been used to prevent the impact of sea waves on this walkway.

The sea wall adjacent to this walkway is constructed using beams and piles.

The road between Princes Street flyover and Mafatlal Club signal around Marine Drive has been widened by 10.56 meters and an average length of 1 kilometer has also become accessible for motorists. This additional service road adjacent to the Princes Street flyover can be used to access the North Tunnel of Coastal road.
