The Maharashtra government has decided to postpone the monsoon session of the state legislature which was scheduled to start from June 22. However, the monsoon session will be held from August 3 in view of the coronavirus outbreak in Maharashtra.

The decision was announced on Wednesday after the meeting of Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of Maharashtra legislature. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar both said that it was not possible to hold the monsoon session on June 22.

Pawar said that the decision to postpone the monsoon session of Maharashtra Legislature was taken in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

The state is under a nationwide lockdown till June 30 and with the intra-district travel is also not allowed, it would make it difficult for the members to travel to Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai which is a coronavirus hotspot.

However, Pawar said that a special session for a day to clear supplementary demands could be held before August 3. Earlier, the budget session was adjourned on March 14 and was cut short by at least a week as Maharashtra reported its first case of COVID-19.

According to the Free Press Journal, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis has extended his support to the Maharashtra government in this regard. He also said that the opposition was prepared for a one-day session to pass supplementary demands before August 3.

However, Fadnavis contested that the presence of for legislators should not be made mandatory amid the coronavirus outbreak. The Deputy CM informed that efforts were being made so that the legislators can participate in the legislature proceedings via video conferencing.
