After “Maharashtra Bachao Andolan” (Save Maharashtra protest), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to launch another agitation across the state to press the demands of farmers against the Uddhav Thackeray government.
The Maharashtra BJP has organised the protest - Karj mafi kara, peak (crop) Karj deya - to highlight the “failure” of Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to provide loan waiver and fresh crop loan to farmers.
Maharashtra BJP President Chandrakant Patil on Sunday said that the process of loan waiver has come to a halt ahead of the monsoon and Kharif. The BJP will launch a statewide agitation against the three-party alliance as they have completely ignored the problems faced by the farmers, he added.
“The farmers are not getting seeds and fertilisers in remote areas. The Kharif season is right ahead but the Maharashtra government has failed to provide loan waiver and fresh crop loan for farmers,” Patil said while adding that the agriculture work in rural areas has been stopped due to COVID-19 outbreak but has been ongoing.
BJP is set to launch a signature campaign as a part of its protest against the Uddhav Thackeray government. A petition signed by lakhs of farmers facing troubles will be submitted to the state government, Patil said while adding that the party workers will protest outside banks to press demands for a loan waiver and crop loan for farmers.
As the monsoon season is arriving, the cotton crops which remain unsold will be destroyed and lakhs of farmers will bear the loss. Many farmers are being forced to sell their cotton produce at low prices to traders, Patil said.
“Owing to the COVID-19 outbreak, the cotton procurement centres are not functional and farmers who cultivated other crops such as channa and tur are also facing issues as they have no buyer’s for their produce,” the BJP leader said while adding that the farmers have not received minimum support price for their crops.
Hitting at Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Patil said that the CM has failed to implement the announcement made for the farmers. An announcement of ₹50,000 was made to compensate for the destruction to the orchards. However, emergency relief has not reached the Konkan region yet.
