Cabinet Minister Dhananjay Munde tests positive for coronavirus

According to media reports, the staff working for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader has also been tested positive. They are asymptomatic and have been isolated for precautionary measures.

Maharashtra Social Justice and Special Assistance Minister, Dhananjay Munde has been tested positive for the coronavirus or COVID-19. The report confirming that Munde has been tested COVID-19 positive arrive on Thursday night. 

According to media reports, the staff working for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader has also been tested positive. Munde’s personal assistant, two drivers and his cook have been tested positive for the coronavirus but all including the minister are in stable condition. 

The minister and his staff are asymptomatic but have been isolated for precautionary measures. Munde becomes the third minister in the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to contract the coronavirus. 

Recently, the minister inaugurated a testing laboratory in Beed which is his constituency and has been attending cabinet meetings along with other events. On June 10, Munde attended the NCP's 21st-anniversary celebrations and came in contact with several party leaders. 

Earlier, senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan and NCP leader Jitendra Awhad were tested positive for COVID-19. Both leaders have now recovered from the virus. Chavan, who tested positive on May 24, was transferred to Mumbai from his native place Nanded in Maharashtra after he contacted the deadly virus on May 24. 

The Public Works Department (PWD) minister was recently discharged from a private hospital in Mumbai. Meanwhile, Awhad was also discharged after making full recovery on May 10.

Maharashtra has been the worst-hit state due to the coronavirus outbreak. Since its first case on March 9, the number of COVID-19 cases in the state has reached 97,648 nearing the one lakh-mark. The death toll in Maharashtra has touched 3,590. 

In Mumbai alone, the number of COVID-19 cases have risen to 54,085 and has reported 1,954 deaths. On Thursday, the financial capital reported 97 deaths.
