The Mumbai’s Dabbawala organisation has expressed displeasure with Shiv Sena (Thackeray) party chief Uddhav Thackeray for not fulfilling the promise given to the dabbawalas of Mumbai during the last Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. The BMC election is likely to be held this year and dabbawalas have already expressed their displeasure.

During the 2017 civic body Elections, the Shiv Sena had made some promises for the dabbwalas in Mumbai. Among them, he did not fulfill any other promise except for dabbawala Bhavan. Therefore, Subhash Talekar, president of Mumbai Dabbawala Association, has expressed on social media that there is a lot of dissatisfaction among dabbawalas towards the Shiv Sena (Thackeray) party.

Talekar has said that the Shiv Sena was in power for five years in the BMC. Uddhav Thackeray was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra state for some time. Yet the promises were not fulfilled. We have written several letters to Uddhav Thackeray regarding this but no action has been taken. Talekar has also said that if the promises were not to be fulfilled, then they should not have given those promises.

However, since the dabbawala organisation has expressed such public displeasure in the run-up to the upcoming BMC elections, a discussion has started as to whether this displeasure will affect Thackeray.

What promises were made?

  • To form an Independent Company by organising the dabbawalas into a formal entity, providing better structure and support

  • Financial Support in the form of an initial grant of INR 5 crore in the first year to ensure financial stability for the newly formed company.
