Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut was convicted and sentenced to 15 days imprisonment by the Mazgaon court on Thursday in connection with the defamation allegations made by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya's wife Medha. At the same time, while imposing a fine of INR Rs 25k on Raut, the court also ordered him to pay this amount as damages to Medha.

After Raut said that he did not accept the allegations made by Medha, he was prosecuted in this case. While giving judgement in this case on Thursday, the court found Medha's complaint correct. Raut was also found guilty in a criminal defamation complaint and sentenced to 15 days.

154 public toilets have been constructed in Mira Bhayandar, out of which the contract for construction of 16 toilets was awarded to Medha Somaiya's youth foundation. But Raut accused Medha of a scam of INR 100 crores by submitting fake documents. Subsequently, Medha filed a defamation suit against Raut.

Raut's allegations are defamatory

Considering the documents and video tapes submitted in evidence, it is evidently clear that Raut made defamatory statements against Medha. His statement was heard by a large number of citizens and read in newspapers. The evidence submitted by Raut proves that Medha's reputation has been damaged by Raut's statement. Therefore, the court ordered that Raut be convicted and punished in the defamation case.

What was Medha's claim?

Reports were published on 15 and 16 April 2022 alleging that he was involved in a INR 100 crore scam involving construction and maintenance of some public toilets of Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation. Medha had said in the complaint that she was shocked after reading it. Raut's statements to the media are defamatory. Medha also claimed that these statements were made to defame her in the eyes of the general public.
