A team of Indian students bagged four medals at the 35th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) held in Kazakhstan. Indian team's Vedant Sakre of Mumbai won the gold medal, while Ishan Pednekar from Ratnagiri, Srijith Shivakumar from Chennai and Yashashvi Kumar from Bareilly bagged silver medals.


This year, as many as 305 students from 80 different countries participated in the 35th International Biology Olympiad held from July 7 to 13. A total of 29 gold medals were awarded in this competition. The competition consisted of four practical exams of 1.5 hours and two written exams of 3 hours and 25 minutes. Various subjects like animal anatomy and physiology, molecular biology, biochemistry and bioinformatics were included in the practical exam. The written exam asked questions based on cutting-edge research in areas such as plant biology, cell biology, ethology and biosystematics.

The team of Indian students at the International Biology Olympiad was led by Prof Sasikumar Menon from the Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) Laboratory in Mumbai and Dr Mayuri Rege from Homi Bhabha Science Center and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Dr. Rajesh Patkar from IIT Mumbai and Dr. Devesh Suthar from MS University, Baroda performed as Scientific Observers. For this competition, special guidance was given by the Biology Olympiad Department of Homi Bhabha Science Education Center through workshops.
