Central Railway (CR) is set to launch its first air-conditioned local train with an underslung motor system. In this system, essential electrical parts and motors are placed beneath the coaches instead of inside. The train is expected to start operations by early summer.
The AC local is currently stationed at the Kurla carshed. It has a unique blue-and-silver livery. Currently, it is going through testing and inspection. Railway staff are monitoring its performance and checking the interiors.
The train will have the following features:
1. The underslung system provides more space for passengers by shifting key components under the rake.
2. The new AC local has a seating capacity of 1,116 passengers. This is an increase from the 1,028 seats in earlier models.
3. The standing capacity remains the same at 4,936 passengers.
4. The train also includes modern technology for convenience.
This technology is already in use on Western Railway’s (WR) AC locals. The new train was delivered to Central Railway in November 2024.
Central Railway currently operates six AC locals. Five of them run daily, offering 66 services. This new train will be the seventh in the fleet. It is the first addition in two years. The new rake will act as a backup and reduce cancellations when maintenance is required.
Officials have stated that the number of AC services will not increase immediately. However, the new train will improve operational management. It will make sure that services remain unaffected when repairs are needed, especially on weekends.
The new underslung design may pose challenges during heavy rains. Officials are evaluating its performance under different conditions. Tracks on Central Railway are at a lower level compared to Western Railway. This makes them more prone to waterlogging. If water collects on the tracks, it may affect operations.
