The long-delayed suburban train line that connects Uran in Navi Mumbai to Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) is likely to open around July 15.
The 26.7 kilometer line has been built in two phases. In November 2018, the first phase of the project, which stretches for 12.4 km and connects Kharkopar and Nerul/Belapur, was made available for commercial use.
Meanwhile, work on the remaining 14.3 km was started after some delay and is expected to be completed now. In fact, the monsoon session of the central government is going to start from July 20, and before that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Mumbai. Therefore, the Railways is now considering to start this line around July 15.
The purpose of building this corridor is to improve transportation between CSMT and Uran. Additionally, this project plays an important role in connecting the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The distance between CSMT and Uran on the existing freight line, which is approximately 95.10 kms, will be reduced to almost half by the new line.
Once this last phase becomes operational, passengers will be able to reach Uran from CSMT in approximately one hour and 45 minutes. The Kharkopar-Uran section will have five stations, two major bridges, 41 minor bridges, two road under bridges and four road over bridges (ROB).
