Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik inspected the Dahisar check naka on Thursday, February 6. In response, he has ordered toll contractors to reserve separate lanes for large vehicles at the Dahisar check naka. This comes after complaints about traffic jams in the area.
The Dahisar toll plaza is part of NH-48 and connects Mumbai to Ahmedabad. It has a total of 12 lanes, with six in each direction. Currently, tolls are collected from 4-wheeler heavy vehicles only. The toll plaza has 10 lanes: four for northbound traffic going to Gujarat and six for southbound traffic entering Mumbai.
As per the new order, three lanes will be set aside for regular vehicles and two lanes for heavy vehicles in each direction. Signboards will be installed up to 500 meters before the naka to guide drivers.
However, some people have questioned why the toll booths are not being removed entirely. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which manages toll collection, explained that this would require a two-day traffic shutdown. Such a halt would cause serious disruptions.
The minister examined the check naka with toll contractors and local officials. Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) Commissioner Sanjay Katkar and traffic police personnel were also present.
In 2023, the government removed toll charges for light four-wheelers. The decision was made by then-Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Despite this, congestion has remained a major issue, especially during peak hours. The slow movement of vehicles due to the current toll lane structure has caused delays.
