The Dombivli foot overbridge which was in a dilapidated condition had to be removed last year, with the civic authorities promising a new bridge. Today, officials have announced that the newly constructed bridge will be ready for public use by August.

The railway station at Dombivli sees heavy foot traffic on normal days during morning peak hours (8:30 to 9:30 AM). One survey conducted by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) indicated that a total of 40,000 to 50,000 passengers access Dombivli railway station during morning and evening peak hours.

A senior official mentioned, "A few finishing touches and it should be ready for opening. Works are being finished on the staircase roof. Taking benefit of the lockdown, we were able to complete the work during two blocks undertaken in May (May 17 and 31).”

He added that this foot overbridge will be 6 meters wide containing three spans. The work was apparently done in three phases, completing on the 31st of May. This newly constructed bridge will also establish a connection to the skywalk located on the eastern side, the official said.

There’s no doubt that civic authorities have taken full advantage of the lockdown by conducting works on pending infrastructure projects. Though civic works were allowed by the State Government, rules like social distancing, wearing of masks as well as provisions of hand sanitizers were to be strictly followed. However, the lack of social distancing has always remained a concern in such construction sites.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region has seen a sharp increase in the number of COVID-19 cases even as lockdowns are enforced and followed. The BMC recently started awareness campaigns in residential societies and high-rise apartments to contain the spread of the virus.
