Mumbai will soon get a new rail terminus in Jogeshwari. It will be located between Jogeshwari and Ram Mandir and is expected to open within six months. It has been under construction for nearly two years at a cost of INR 69 crore.
The new terminus will ease congestion at Mumbai Central, Dadar, and Bandra. The project has reached key milestones, with the labour shed completed. Work on the cover shed, service building, platforms, and station building is ongoing. Track laying has also begun. Officials aim to complete 70–75% of the work by March.
The new terminal will have the following new features:
- The terminus features an island platform, which allows trains to arrive on both sides, saving space.
- The platform is 600 meters long and 12 meters wide, designed to accommodate 24-coach trains.
- The facility will also include a Power Run Down line for train shunting and two berthing lines. Coaches will have access to watering services.
- The new terminus will improve connectivity, linking with the Western Express Highway, Andheri-Dhaisar, and Lokhandwala-Vikhroli routes.
Initially, officials plan to shift 12 train services from Mumbai Central and Bandra to Jogeshwari. This will free up capacity at other stations, allowing for additional suburban train services. Currently, there are discussions to make Jogeshwari the terminal for trains like Vande Bharat and Tejas Express.
The terminus will reduce congestion, enhance connectivity, and meet growing passenger demand. However, citizens have reportedly raised concerns about crowding if multiple trains arrive at the same time.
