To make the journey of passengers on the harbour line comfortable and fast and to manage the rush, the Central Railway (CR) administration is constructing the Kurla elevated harbour line between Chunabhatti and Tilaknagar.
The work on this project has been going on slowly for quite some time. Therefore, the deadline of this project has now been extended to 31 December 2025, authorities clarified in the RTI.
RTI official Anil Galgali had asked the Central Railway about the Kurla elevated line in his application to get information under the Right to Information Act.
The work of the Kurla elevated line has been given to the contractor M/s Walecha RE Infra (JV). The current completion period for the project is 31 December 2025. The total contract value is Rs 89.26 crore. So far, an amount of INR 62.65 crore has been given, informed Rohit Mehta, Deputy Chief Engineer of Central Railway to Galgali.
Meanwhile, no penalty has been imposed on the contractor who delayed the project. However, he has been given 70 per cent of the amount, Galgali said.
Anil Galgali, in a letter sent to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and the General Manager of Central Railway, has raised questions about the delay in the project and the non-imposition of penalty on the contractor.
Due to the delay in the work, the passengers are having to bear unnecessary hardship. If the project is not completed on time, the cost is likely to increase.
The Central Railway administration needs to properly monitor the project and take action against those responsible for the delay. If the speed of the work of this project is increased and it is completed on time, the travel of passengers will be convenient, Galgali said in the letter.
Local trains are run between CSMT - Vashi, Belapur, Panvel stations from platform numbers 7 and 8 at Kurla station. So, local trains are run from platforms 1 to 6 towards CSMT – Kasara, Khopoli.
However, due to mail, express and goods trains, there is a limit on the frequency and speed of local trains. Therefore, an elevated line is being built near platforms 7, 8 of Kurla station. The elevated line will end at Kasaiwada to Santacruz-Chebur Link Road i.e. LTT.
The length of this line is 1.1 km. Three platforms will be built at Kasaiwada. A pedestrian bridge and a skywalk will be built. Along with this, shops, food stalls, and additional space for passengers will be provided here. Kurla station on the Harbor line will also be elevated.
