The Maharashtra government plans to create a unified public transport system in Mumbai. Under this system, commuters will access trains, buses, and taxi services with a single card or smartphone app. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held a detailed meeting in Mumbai on Saturday, January 18.
During this time, they reviewed the groundbreaking single-platform app designed to revolutionize urban transportation in Mumbai. MITRA (Maharashtra Institution for Transformation) will lead the integrated ticketing system. It will merge the ticketing process of all transport providers.
The new system will allow passengers to reach public transport within 300 to 500 meters by foot. Fadnavis said local trains are Mumbai’s lifeline. The integrated service will improve connections, increase revenue, and attract more passengers to public transport.
Furthermore, Fadnavis said this platform will connect remote areas with smooth and efficient transit options. The goal is to improve connectivity and make travel easier for millions of people. The system will save time and reduce transportation challenges by offering access to all services on a single platform.
Both leaders assured full cooperation from all stakeholders. Vaishnaw praised the state government’s efforts and pledged full support from the Railway Ministry. Fadnavis talked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a single mobility platform integrating all public transport systems.
Vaishnaw noted Mumbai currently runs 3,500 local train services. An investment of INR 17,107 crore will add 300 more trains. He also talked about investments of INR 1.70 lakh crore in railway projects across Maharashtra. Key stakeholders, including Indian Railways, Mumbai Metro, BEST buses, app-based taxis, and state-run buses, will also collaborate.
Mumbai serves over 80 lakh local train commuters and 32 lakh bus passengers daily. Many others rely on Metro trains, taxis, and app-based ride services.
