Commuters in Mumbai can now rejoice as the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) is soon planning to start the three new classes of services on the city's first Roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry. The service currently runs between Mumbai and Alibaug.

Information released by MMB mentions that passengers will be able to choose from general, air-conditioned and luxury classes and the fares for the same were finalised in a meeting held on Monday. Commuters will have to pay ₹220, ₹330 and ₹550 for general, AC and the luxury class respectively. Further, the fares for cars have also been divided into three slabs where one will have to pay ₹1,100, ₹1,500 and ₹1,900 respectively, depending on the size of the vehicles.

Talking about the same, MMB official has mentioned that the inaugural run of the ferry will be decided once the custom duty is paid and the necessary arrangements are made. Officials have purchased a 95 metres long and 18 metres wide M2M1 ferry from Greece which is capable of carrying 1,500 people and 200 cars.

The Mumbai RoRo ferry project was announced by former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in 2016 and the same was expected to be completed by March 2018. The project was delayed due to poor response from the operators. It is said that this project would help commuters save a good amount of time.
