Mumbai's transportation landscape is set for a major transformation as critical infrastructure projects, including Metro services and airport connectivity, gain momentum. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently chaired a high-level review meeting to address delays in Metro projects caused by the lack of land for car sheds. The meeting, held at the Sahyadri State Guest House, saw Fadnavis pushing for immediate solutions to ensure progress despite logistical challenges.
The Chief Minister emphasized the urgency of operationalizing 23 km of Metro services this year and suggested temporary measures to address the car shed issue. He underscored the importance of expanding Mumbai's Metro network by at least 50 km annually. Along with the 23 km slated for launch in 2024, an additional 20 to 25 km of Metro-3 lines are expected to follow. To prevent further delays, Fadnavis directed officials to identify and reserve land for future car sheds.
In a parallel development, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) achieved a milestone on December 29, 2024, with the landing of its first commercial flight. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is now expediting plans to establish a Metro connection between NMIA and the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). This Airport Express Line Metro aims to provide seamless and hassle-free connectivity for passengers traveling between the two airports.
CIDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director Vijay Singhal reiterated the agency's commitment to delivering the 33-km Airport Express Line Metro as quickly as possible. He highlighted the importance of the project in improving passenger convenience and reducing travel time. A senior CIDCO official disclosed that the detailed project report (DPR) for the Metro line is under preparation and will be completed within three months. Once finalized, CIDCO plans to initiate the tendering process immediately to ensure swift execution.
These projects are expected to significantly enhance Mumbai’s transportation infrastructure, offering faster, more reliable travel options for residents and visitors. With the Chief Minister’s focus on pushing Metro services forward and CIDCO’s commitment to efficient airport connectivity, the city is poised to take a significant leap in addressing its growing transportation needs.
