The Andheri Regional Transport Office (RTO) has registered over 200 cases against autorickshaws for violating rules in the first five days of the ongoing fortnight-long special drive. The cases have been registered against those autorickshaws operating without permits, licenses, certificates and uniforms.

About 44 per cent of these cases were registered outside Bandra railway station. Bandra railway station is one of the busiest transit points in the city. E-challans have been issued to 113 autorickshaw owners, RTO officials said.

The RTO has been receiving complaints from citizens that auto drivers outside the station are harassing customers by charging more, refusing fares, behaving rudely and driving improperly.

“In two days, we found 28 auto drivers without their mandatory badges and eight auto rickshaws whose validity had expired. Many others had expired permits, driving licenses and pollution control certificates (PUCs)," said an Andheri RTO official.

As many as 209 vehicles were checked in two days, resulting in 83 offences being registered and 41 e-challans being issued.

Another 265 vehicles were checked at other busy areas like railway stations in Jogeshwari, Santacruz and Vile parle and metro stations in DN Nagar and Versova.

Out of these, 72 vehicles were issued e-challans while 39 drivers were found driving without badges.

Andheri RTO chief Anil Patil said, "We have also found many autos with broken windscreens, non-functional headlights and tail lights, and non-functional indicators. The drive will continue from Bandra to Goregaon in the next few days," he added.
