The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will start a widespread rabies vaccination campaign across mumbai on September 28. It will be a part of India's National Action Plan for Rabies Elimination, which aims to make the country rabies-free by 2030.
Rabies is a deadly disease often caused by dog bites. The Mumbai Rabies Eradication Project, also known as Mission Rabies, began in 2022 in collaboration with Worldwide Veterinary Services. The program focusses on vaccinating stray dogs and raising awareness about rabies and animal care.
The BMC has already been running various awareness campaigns at different public institutions. These include schools, colleges, cooperative housing societies, and other community spaces like construction sites.
The civic body has partnered with many animal welfare organisations and educational institutions. The goal is to make sure that everyone understands the risks of rabies and how to prevent it. In August alone, BMC representatives reached out to 13,332 children from 65 schools. They also engaged with 271 teachers and 793 citizens.
To make the vaccination process available, the BMC has also introduced an online service. People can now make requests for sterilising and vaccinating stray or pet dogs. This can be done through the MyBMC mobile app or via a dedicated website at https://vhd.mcgm.gov.in/register-grievance.
The initiative is led by Bhushan Gagrani, BMC Commissioner and Administrator. Dr. Ashwini Joshi, Additional Municipal Commissioner (city), and Kiran Dighavkar, Deputy Commissioner (special), play significant roles in the campaign's success.
