Post deadly and cowardly Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan has closed down its airspace for Indian carriers leading Mumbai Air Traffic Control (ATC) to take on a sharp spike in traffic volumes, as per the report by CNBC-TV18. Now, the Mumbai ATC will have to manage additional 120 international flights per day which will be rerouted from their original paths flying over Pakistan.
Flights from northern Indian cities such as Delhi, Lucknow, Chandigarh, and Amritsar, which usually pass over Lahore and Karachi, will now follow a southern rerouted path. These will now enter Mumbai’s airspace and will fly over the Arabian Sea and Oman, and then continue to their destinations in Europe, the UK, or the US.

This in return would increase flying time for flights from Delhi to Europe by around 2.5 hours. For Delhi to the US flights, airlines might have to make a refuelling stop in Europe, which will add approximately four hours to the total journey time. This is not the first time Mumbai ATC has managed international flights from northern India. In 2019, during a similar situation, it handled over 550 additional flights.
