On one hand, leader of opposition Ravi Raja along with other corporators are planning to pass a no-confidence motion against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) commissioner Ajoy Mehta for not carrying out satisfactory inquiry in Kamala Mills fire incident, on the other hand, Mehta said that he was pressurised by a politico while taking action against the outlets in Kamala Mills.
When I was taking action against outlets in Kamala Mills, I was asked by a politico, How could I take action. I will listen to all but will work as per law and that is what I believe in. Because of which, I razed 17 illegal structures and will continue to do so. I will not back out. Now, leaders of opposition parties should find out about the political leader.”
Ajoy Mehta.
Mehta spoke in his defence when he was being accused by LoP Ravi Raja in the BMC house on Friday when Kamala Mills fire incident was being discussed.
Post the fire incident, five BMC officers were suspended and will be prosecuted after an inquiry. Mehta said that nobody has got a clean chit.
Mehta said that in a month's time, he will present the inquiry report in the BMC house.
In two days, we cross-checked 1300 hotels and pubs. Out of which we took action against 670 hotels/pubs and sealed 30. We will also raze illegal structures soon.”
Mehta also informed that in order to improve fire safety norms, the civic body will appoint officers in all 34 fire brigade stations who will look into the safety. He added that henceforth, fire brigade officers will seal the place if they don't see any fire-related equipment and will not serve any notice.
At the same time, Mehta said that despite protest from Congress and BJP, he is hell-bent on the rooftop policy.
