In order to raise awareness regarding conserving trees and greenery, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to felicitate societies who maintain gardens and plant trees. The BMC has announced a competition to honour those who do good work in conserving trees, gardens and undertake composting in the city.

The last date for submission of applications will be January 21.

The civic body will be holding the competition in several categories. Societies who have planted more than 50 trees and have maintained them for at least six months will be able to apply in one category. In this category, the trees will have to be at least 12-feet tall and with a girth of at least six inches.

In another category, those conserving trees on government or private premises bigger than 1,000 square metres will also be able to participate.

Another category will be for housing societies of 200 square metres with gardens covering 50 square metres and another category will be for those who maintain greenery on dividers and medians.

Winners will be felicitated with a trophy and certificate. Interested will have to send their applications to Superintendent of Gardens, Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Garden and Zoo, Byculla, Mumbai - 400027.
