Earlier this year, the state recorded a low rainfall due to which several parts of Maharashtra are currently under a situation of drought. Several districts in the state have been devoid of enough rainfall and are facing a crisis of drinking water. Accordingly, the opposition leaders have accused the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) of an undeclared water cut throughout the city and accordingly, they walked out of the Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday.

The municipal corporation has been cutting off water resources throughout the city since the last month. Due to which, the citizens have faced a water crisis and accordingly, numerous complaints were filed at BMC’s various departments. However, the corporation has denied cutting off the water and so, the opposition parties aggressively opposed the lies fed by the civic body and thus, conducted a walkout.

People from Byculla, Cuffe Parade, Mahalaxmi, Churchgate, and neighbouring areas complained of a reduction in the extent of water they would usually receive since the past one month. Accordingly, the opposition parties, Congress along with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Samajwadi Party (SP), boycotted the meeting on Wednesday.

On the other hand, BMC Additional Commissioner Abasaheb Jarhad clarified that none of the parts in Mumbai had received a water cut. He added that according to the usual routine, a supply of 3350 million litres per day (MLD) is dispatched to Mumbai. Despite the clarification, the opposition parties in the Standing Committee have refused to believe the municipal corporation and have expressed their concerns regarding the lies being told.

Since the last month, several places in Mumbai have faced an undeclared water cut and several corporators have reached out to me describing the problems of the water cut. However, the municipal corporation has refused to acknowledge and accept the water cut done by them. BMC is feeding the people with lies and is cheating the people,” opposition leader Ravi Raja told Mumbai Live.
