Project-affected people in Mumbai will now get cash compensation instead of houses. This compensation will be between a minimum of INR 25 lakh and a maximum of INR 40 lakh. The Mumbai Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) took an important decision in this regard in its 159th meeting on Thursday.
The meeting was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of the Authority, Eknath Shinde. MMRDA is responsible for development works in an area of more than six thousand square km in Mumbai. This includes works such as metro lines, flyovers, coastal roads, creek bridges, road expansion, etc.
These works often require land acquisition, which involves the loss of citizens' land. Sometimes, even if the land is not directly lost, citizens suffer financial losses or have to be displaced for other reasons. Until now, all such project victims had to be provided with flats as compensation by the MMRDA.
However, in places like Mumbai, it is often difficult to get houses at the project site. Due to this, the authority has now decided to provide a lump sum cash compensation. This decision will be available to future project victims. This mainly includes the project-affected people of the 'Shivdi-Worli Connector' bridge, which is under construction at a rapid pace. They will be the first to benefit from this decision.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that this decision by the authority is an important step towards transforming Mumbai's infrastructure.
For residential category, the minimum compensation amount for both authorised and encroached persons will be INR 25 lakh. Those with authorised and legal construction or house will be given 100 percent compensation as per ready reckoner rate for a maximum area of 1,292 sq ft. Encroachment or slum dwellers will get compensation of 0.75 percent of the ready reckoner of the land in their possession. The maximum compensation limit for both these categories in the residential category is INR 40 lakh.
Non-residential, i.e. commercial project victims with premises on the ground floor, will be compensated at the ready reckoner rate, with a maximum limit of 225 square feet. Also, if there is an eligible area, compensation will be provided at the rate of 100 percent of the ready reckoner rate for authorised and legal construction and at the rate of 0.75 percent of the ready reckoner rate for encroached and slum-dwelling businesses.
