Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken a big step to boost transport infrastructure. It has secured financial closure for the much-anticipated Underground Orange Gate to Marine Drive Tunnel Road project.

As per reports, the Union Bank of India has sanctioned a INR 7,326 crore loan at a competitive rate of interest, ensuring optimal financial efficiency. With this, the construction of this route will be escalated at a faster pace.

MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee has signed this agreement under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. MMRDA Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Vikram Kumar and Ashwin Mudgal among other dignitaries were present there.

Project Features:

  • The project will have a 9.2 km twin-tunnel. Each tunnel will be of 6.52 km and will be 11 meters wide.
  • It will be connecting Orange Gate (Eastern Freeway) to Marine Drive coastal road.
  • A dedicated emergency lane will be constructed, further enhancing safety.
  • East-West connectivity will be strengthened and a ring route will be created for South Mumbai.
  • It will have two lanes for traffic and the third lane will be reserved for emergency use.
  • It is expected to significantly improve travel times and traffic flow, marking a new era in the city’s transportation network.
