Mumbai has been experiencing a dry spell since the past few days after a span of consecutive rains in July. However, the rainfall activity is expected to pick up pace again from August 3 in the city and adjoining areas of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Owing to the break from rains, the city has witnessed high temperature this week. On August 1 morning, the temperature in Mumbai was recorded at 27.79 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity is 84%.
As per India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rainfall intensity is likely to be lower than the previous week when the city recorded 176mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ended July 22.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for parts of Thane and Palghar, indicating that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at a few places for August 3.
Officials said the reason for the expected increase in rain activity was due to the strengthening of westerly winds.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra saw its wettest July this year ever since record keeping began in 1901, with a staggering 529.5mm of rainfall drenching the state this month.
Some of Maharashtra's highest July rainfall totals in the last century include 528mm in 2022, 507.8mm in 2013, 520.1mm in 1944 and 508.7mm in 1942.
