The Maharashtra government has introduced new security measures for fishermen. Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane recently inspected Sassoon Dock and found that a lot of fishermen did not have Aadhaar cards. Following this, he directed officials to enforce new rules.

On Friday, January 31, Fisheries Commissioner Kishore Tawde issued an official order. As per the order, fishermen must now carry Aadhaar cards with QR codes when leaving ports. The government has also made vessel registration markings mandatory.

The order says that Aadhaar cards with QR codes are now required for all fishermen. Fishing vessels must also display their registration number. The number must be painted on the cabin roof. It must also be visible on both sides at the back of the ship.

Fishermen will receive fishing tokens only if they follow these rules. Licenses will only be renewed after compliance. If fishermen do not comply, their licenses may be revoked. Further legal action may be taken under the Maharashtra Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1981 (Amended 2021).

This rule follows Section 435(H) of the Indian Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, and Section 6(4) of the Maharashtra Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1981 (Amended 2021). Tawde confirmed that these rules are now in effect.
