The Maharashtra Home Department is soon going to deactivate the photo-upload feature in the MahaTrafficApp. This development comes after complaints of the misuse of the feature.

MahaTrafficApp allowed users to upload images of traffic violations, such as illegal parking, in the app. However, there have been accusations that traffic challans were being issued based on these images without any on-site verification.

According to reports, some traffic officers were issuing challans just based on photos submitted via the app. This raised concerns because the officers are supposed to confirm the violations in person. There were also reports that some officers used their personal cellphones to take pictures of violations and pressured drivers to comply or pay fines.

The Home Department had previously warned traffic officials not to issue challans based on unverified photos or photos taken with unauthorized devices. Despite this, challans were issued to allegedly meet the revenue targets.

Furthermore, concerns were raised about traffic wardens using the app to settle personal disputes. This included parking conflicts in residential areas. In response to these allegations, the Home Department made a committee to investigate the issue and recommend solutions in 2024.

Based on the findings of this committee, the decision was made to remove the photo-upload feature from the app to prevent further misuse of the app and make sure that traffic laws are fair.
