Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has clarified the ongoing controversy over the names of metro stations being displayed only in English, saying that the names of the stations will be displayed in Marathi and English.
MMRC said in an official statement, "Work on Phase 2A of Metro-3 is progressing rapidly, under this phase, name boards are currently being installed at metro stations, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation assures that very soon, the names of all stations will be prominently displayed in both Marathi and English, in fact, Phase 1 of Metro-3 between Aarey and BKC is already operational, and all stations on that route have name boards in both Marathi and English."
MNS had protested a few days ago at Siddhivinayak Metro Station in Dadar due to the name of the station being written in English and demanded that the names of all metro stations be written in Marathi. MNS had also blackened the names of stations written in English at many metro stations.
MMRC said in a statement: "MMRC firmly maintains that Marathi is the official language of Maharashtra and it is our responsibility to maintain its dignity. The allegation that the use of Marathi is being deliberately avoided is completely baseless. MMRC strictly follows the guidelines of the Maharashtra Government regarding the use of Marathi in official and public communication."
