The Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has decided to stop providing new water connections to multi-storeyed structures of more than four floors owing to a water crisis in Mira Bhayander. Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Katkar took this decision for the same.
The ban will remain in place till the commissioning of the Surya Regional Water Supply Project, which is expected to increase supply by 218 million liters per day (MLD) in May-2025. At present Mira Bhayandar requires more than 235 MLD of water supply. But only 221 MLD is being supplied. This water supply is being done by Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (135 MLD) and Shahad Temghar (STEM) Water Authority (86 MLD).

However, actual supply is limited to around 192 MLD which is 15 percent due to low supply and in-transit distribution losses. Frequent shutdowns, unaccounted supply and theft by both suppliers have further exacerbated the water problem. The much-awaited 218 MLD Surya Regional Water Supply Scheme, initiated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is nearing completion.
With Surya Dam at Dhamani village in Jawhar as the source, the Surya project will supply 403 MLD of water which will be divided between Mira Bhayander and Vasai Virar at the rate of 218 and 185 MLD respectively. As per MBMC registry, Mira-Bhayander has a total of 44,887 water bodies with 41,683 for residential use and 3,204 for commercial/industrial purposes.
