After the relocation of diamond trade, Air India headquarters in Mumbai, now moves have started to shift intellectual property rights (patent) headquarters under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry to Delhi. At this headquarters in Mumbai (currently Antop Hill) for 50 years, an average of more than one lakh patents from abroad come for approval.
With the patent headquarters moving to Delhi, the importance of Mumbai will decrease. The headquarters of the Ministry of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (CGPDTM) of the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry is currently located at Wadala Antop Hill in Mumbai, the financial capital of the world to recognize the new inventions of the entrepreneurs of the world. A few years ago this headquarters was located at Parel.
Migration in three months
In the 1970s, offices for patent, design and trademark approval were established in six major cities of the country. In this place, applications for patents up to one lakh are received from the country and some from abroad. A senior officer has decided to shift this headquarters to Delhi. Initially, the headquarters was supposed to be shifted to Ahmedabad, but in view of the political opposition, the order to shift the headquarters to Dwarka Bhawan in Delhi was passed in December. There are orders to shift this headquarters in three months.
There are 240 officers and staff in the headquarters. The process of granting patents at the headquarters in Mumbai is very strict. For this, the patent examination process takes 32 months. Shifting the headquarters from Mumbai to Delhi will create many problems. Apart from issuing patents, the work of resolving disputes between two patents is done at this headquarters. Strategic decisions about patents, designs, and trademarks are made at this headquarters.
