After a brief dip in temperatures, Mumbaikars will once again reel under the scorching heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for March 9 and 10, marking the second such alert in two weeks.

According to the weather bureau, hot and humid conditions will grip some areas of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad on Friday, March 8, and will likely intensify into a heatwave on March 9-10 and extend to Palghar.

However, Mumbai woke up to a comparatively cooler morning on Friday, March 8, with a minimum temperature of 18.2 degrees Celsius at IMD’s Santacruz observatory and 21.5 degrees Celsius at Colaba.

The coastal city, along with neighbouring Thane and Raigad districts, is expected to witness temperatures soaring above 38°C, with interior areas like Navi Mumbai, Thane likely to hit a blistering 39°C–41°C.

Officials from IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai attribute the spike in daytime temperatures to strong easterly winds.

On Thursday, March 6, IMD's Santacruz and Colaba observatories logged a maximum temperature of 35.5°C (2.5°C above normal) and 35.3°C (4.1°C above normal), respectively. Santacruz had recorded 37.4°C the previous day, March 5.
