Due to heavy rainfall in catchment areas, Mumbai's water stock in seven lakes has more than doubled in the past week. On Sunday, July 7, the water stock was 2.1 lakh million litres, which is 14.53%. However, by July 15, it had increased to 5.08 lakh million litres. This is 35.11% of the annual stock, as per Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data.
The current water stock of 5.08 lakh million litres is slightly more than the levels in 2023. But, it is less than half of the stock in 2022, which was 10.8 lakh million litres on July 15.
Despite this, the 10% water cut that was implemented in the city on June 5 will continue. As per reports, water cuts will remain until sufficient water accumulates in all catchments.
The catchment areas received good rainfall over the past 10-12. Six of the seven lakes had about 125 mm of rainfall. The Upper Vaitarna catchment area received less rainfall, which lake levels continued to remain at zero.
Despite the early monsoon arrival this year, the catchment areas did not receive much rainfall in June. The water supply in the seven lakes had dropped by 5%.
Hence, the state government approved the use of reserve stocks from the Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa lakes. The current water supply has a 90-day or three-month shelf life.
