In a significant move to enhance commuter’s comfort and convenience, the Western Railway (WR) is gearing up to convert around 100 more 12-car local services into 15-car trains by the end of the year.
With this, the WR also aims to offer increased passenger capacity by 25 per cent. It will also bring a major relief to daily commuters once fully implemented.
Additionally, the extension of 27 platforms across 14 stations on the slow corridor between Andheri and Virar to accommodate 15-car trains has been completed at an estimated cost of INR 60 crore.
A major infrastructure upgrade has been completed along a 40-km stretch between Andheri and Virar, enabling the operation of 15-car local trains.
The work involved extending platforms at 14 stations to accommodate the longer trains, remodelling four major railway yards — Andheri, Bhayander, Vasai Road, and Virar—and constructing or extending five foot overbridges.
Besides, a Double Discharge facility has been introduced at Jogeshwari station to ensure smoother dispersal of commuters.
For the unversed, WR had first introduced 15-car services on its slow line between Andheri and Virar on June 28, 2021. At present, it operates around 1,250 local train services daily, of which 79 are 15-car trains, while the rest are still 12-car services. Currently, WR operates around 1,250 suburban services, with 79 already utilising 15-car trains and the remainder running with 12 cars.
