After receiving repeated complaints from motorists and pedestrians, the Mumbai Traffic Police has initiated a special drive targeting electric bikes involved in traffic violations, particularly food delivery app riders.

The traffic violations include rash driving, jumping signals, and riding on footpaths. Offenders are being charged under the BNS and Motor Vehicles Act (MVA), including sections related to rash driving.

This special drive was started on August 9 and will continue till further instructions from the higher officer of the traffic division.

As per an official data revealed by the city traffic police, between August 9-11, they have registered cases against 221 e-bike riders across the city and seized 290 e-bikes.

In addition to that, the authorities issued fines to 272 e-bike riders for going in the opposite direction, 491 for disregarding signals, 252 for entering restricted areas, and charged 161 riders for breaching civil acts.

With this, a total of 1176 riders penalised and a fine of INR 1.63 lakh were collected from violators.

An official stated that the traffic police will send letters to these delivery app companies, asking them to outline the guidelines they have in place for their e-riders and to explain the steps they are taking to address traffic rule violations and road safety concerns caused by their riders.
