The Bombay High Court building is to be built on 30 acres of land in Bandra Government Colony. The issue of rehabilitation of the slum dwellers in Gautam Nagar slum on this site had become serious. 100 slum dwellers had rejected houses in Malvani and raised their demand for rehabilitation in Bandra itself.

There was also a fight for rehabilitation in Bandra itself. This was likely to create problems in the High Court building project. But now the issue of rehabilitation of these 100 slum dwellers has been resolved and the way has been cleared for the construction of the High Court building. The struggle of the residents of Gautam Nagar has been successful. The Slum Rehabilitation Authority has now decided to rehabilitate these slum dwellers in Bandra itself and has also released them.

Slum huts on 2.5 acres

The new building of the Bombay High Court will be built on the site of the Bandra Government Colony. For this, 30 acres of land has been given to the High Court by the Public Works Department and the government colony buildings on this land have been demolished. Of this 30 acres of land, 2.5 acres of land was the Gautam Nagar slum.

The rehabilitation of 138 eligible slum dwellers in this slum was a challenge for the Public Works Department. It was decided to provide houses to these slum dwellers in Malvani outside Bandra. However, the slum dwellers strongly opposed this and raised the demand to provide houses in Bandra itself. They protested for this, followed up with the slum authority and the Public Works Department, and now their demand has finally been accepted. Due to the efforts of Dr. Mahendra Kalyankar, Chief Executive Officer of the Slum Authority, 100 out of 138 eligible slum dwellers in Gautam Nagar will now be rehabilitated in Bandra itself. A decision has been taken and a lottery has also been conducted to provide houses to 95 slum dwellers.

The houses in the Om Sai project are 300 square feet, while the houses in the Balaji Shopkeepers Association project are 269 square feet. These houses have been accepted by the slum dwellers and they are happy that the rehabilitation is taking place in Bandra itself. On the other hand, the way has been cleared for the construction of the High Court building.
