Western Railway (WR) is introducing Mumbai’s first open-air restaurant on wheels at Bandra West station. The goal is to repurpose a retired train coach into a vibrant dining area. It will also address traffic issues caused by poorly parked autorickshaws near the station.
A retired train coach was recently positioned near the heritage Bandra station. To make room for the new restaurant, an old structure was demolished, and some facilities were relocated. These include a multifunctional store, a pharmacy, and an ATM block.
Features:
This project will bring order to the area while improving the station’s cultural atmosphere.
While the area currently has debris from the demolition, efforts are underway to clear it and prepare for the restaurant.
The space outside Platform 1’s main entrance is also being considered for conversion into an art gallery. This idea would further increase the station’s cultural appeal.
Recent steps have been taken to manage traffic outside Bandra station. Encroaching vendors have been removed, and other measures have eased congestion. However, traffic bottlenecks caused by autorickshaws remain a challenge.
Bandra station is a Grade-1 heritage structure known for its cultural significance. The station’s newly restored architecture and wooden frames will serve as a new dining experience. The freshly restored Bandra station cost INR 12 crore to restore. During the refurbishment, the station's stone exterior and stained-glass windows were restored.
