According to a latest report submitted by Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) to the crime branch, the massive hoarding in Ghatkopar, which collapsed on May 13, was installed on an inadequate and weak foundation.

The interim report of technical analysis for the collapse was submitted to the police on Wednesday, May 5.

VJTI also observed that any hoarding structure in Mumbai should ideally be able to withstand wind speeds of 44 metre per second or 158km per hour; however, the one that collapsed on the petrol pump could withstand only one fourth of that wind speed.

On May 25, VJTI visited the site and collected samples of the foundation as well as the pilling of the structure. The report pointed out deficiencies in the design of the foundation of the hoarding.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and police had asked VJTI to find out the technical cause behind the hoarding collapse.

Since police insisted, the institute has submitted an interim report on priority basis. They are expected to submit a detailed one to the civic body as well as the police.

On Monday, June 3, the special investigation team looking into the case questioned the BMC official Sunil Dalvi about the show-cause notice issued by civic body to the Government Railway Police (GRP) on hoarding permissions.

Dalvi was in contact with Bhavesh Bhinde, owner of Ego Media Pvt Ltd, the agency responsible for erecting the hoarding, for the past year, official added.
