Mumbai division of Western Railway (WR) has decided to impose a maximum fine of INR 500 for offenders caught spitting or littering on station premises. Previously, the fine was levied used to be generally INR 200, said Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of WR.
The CPRO said that Railway Act allows fines ranging from INR 100 to INR 500. The decision to impose INR 500 fine is to raise awareness and discourage such behavior.
Similarly, in 2016 the fine was increased to INR 500 from INR 200. However, the decision was rolled back following pressure from passengers’ association.
It is pertinent to note that in the current financial year till January 2025, a fine of INR 6 lakh has been recovered from around 2,383 cases.
WR has undertaken 'Operation Pavitra' initiative and cleanliness is being reviewed frequently by the Commercial Department of Railways. Instructions are being given to keep the station premises and toilets clean.
The railway authorities have appointed eight companies on contract basis for cleaning between Churchgate and Virar in Mumbai Central section. Also, a fine of INR 17.84 lakh has been imposed so far on the companies involved in malpractices.
