Coin Toss to be ‘tossed away’ from Test matches

The decision to cancel the coin toss came after several instances of pitches being favorable for the hosts. In order to avoid any injustice to the visiting team, ICC came up with the suggestion.

Test matches, the oldest format of cricket, are regarded to be the foundation of the game. Any Test match begins with a coin toss where the teams call for either ‘heads’ or ‘tails’. But a new rule by International Cricket Council (ICC) intends to scrap the tradition of the coin toss.

Earlier, the home team was supposed to toss the coin in the air and the visiting captain would call for ‘heads’ or ‘tails’. But now the apex cricket association intends to cancel the process. The decision to cancel the coin toss came after several instances of pitches being favorable for the hosts. ICC came up with the suggestion in order to avoid any injustice to the visiting team.

The final call for the decision is expected to be taken by the council on May 28 and 29 at a meeting in Mumbai. A committee will be taking the decision in the meeting consisting of former cricketer Anil Kumble, Andrew Strauss, Mahela Jayawardene, Rahul Dravid, New Zealand Cricket chief David White, Richard Kettleborough, ICC Chief Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle, Shaun Pollock and Claire Connor.

It is expected that the choice to bat or bowl first in a Test Match will be given to the visiting captain.
