In the last two years, the Mumbai Police has seized 2,635 kg of MD, which is worth INR 5,243 crore and 67 lakh rupees. In this operation, one each in Nashik, Solapur, Nalasopara, Kolhapur and two MD manufacturing factories in Gujarat were destroyed. This is a record action so far. Mumbai Police has registered 495 cases related to smuggling and sale of MD in these two years. A total of 718 accused were arrested in these crimes. Meanwhile, MD's sales had increased tremendously since 2010. But it was not declared banned in India. Due to this, it was difficult for the police to take action. So the police started taking action against the MD sellers under Section 328 of IPC. Section 328 means supply or sale of poison. Therefore, temporary action was being taken against the sellers. But the crime was not proved in the court. Finally, on the initiative of the then police officer Suhas Gokhale, who was working in the anti-narcotics squad between 2014-15, a proposal was made to declare MD as a narcotic drug. He was sent to the Centre. Subsequently, in February 2015, MD was declared a narcotic drug under the Narcotics Control Act.
