According to police, in more than 95% of rape cases, the victim knew the accused. While various social factors contribute to crime, officers believe increased awareness and openness in reporting have also led to higher numbers.

The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act cases followed a similar trend. Reports under POCSO had decreased by 4.2% in 2023 compared to 2022 but increased by 8.5% in 2022 over 2021.

As per reports, reporting of POCSO cases has been attributed to the August 2024 Badlapur incident. In this case, a school caretaker was accused of sexually abusing two children. The incident led to widespread protests, and the accused was later killed in a reported police encounter. The Bombay High Court criticized the authorities for failing to ensure child safety in schools.
