Mumbai: Unknown person steals painting worth INR 2.5 crore of famous painter

A complaint has been lodged with the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar (MIA) Marg Police about the theft of a painting titled 'Prakriti' by famous painter SH Raza from the godown of the auction house at Bellard Pier and a case has been registered against the unknown thief based on that complaint. Raza painted this picture in 1992. The complaint states that its cost is more than two and a half crore rupees.


A painting titled 'Prakriti' by SH Raza, which was kept in the warehouse of an auction house at Ballard Pier, was stolen. It was brought there for an auction. The complaint alleged that the picture was stolen between March 24, 2022 and May 30, 2024. Siddhant Shetty had filed a complaint with the police in this matter.


Accordingly, on Monday, the MRA Marg police registered a case of theft under Indian Penal Code 380 against the unknown thief. This picture is 47.2 inches long and 15.7 inches wide and was drawn by Raza in 1992. This painting, popularly known as 'Prakriti', is worth two and a half crore rupees. Police are investigating further with the help of CCTV footage in this matter.

Sayed Haider Raza (22 February 1922 – 23 July 2016) was an Indian painter who lived and worked in France for most of his career. Born on 22 February 1922 in Kakkaiya (District Mandla), Central Provinces, British India (present-day Madhya Pradesh), Raza moved to France in 1950, marrying the French artist Janine Mongillat in 1959. Following her death from cancer in 2002, Raza returned to India in 2010, where he would live until his death on 28 July 2016.

He was a recipient of the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and the Legion of Honour from the Republic of France, among many other accolades.
